Explanation of levels

Level Summary

Each level has 4 parts: Grammar; Vocabulary, Reading & Writing, and Speaking

Low ESL:

This course introduces English by identifying the 26 letters of the alphabet and their sounds. Once established we will branch out the sounds to make basic words through combining common letter sounds and learning irregular forms of spelling. Once a foundation is learned, students will build vocabulary on those sounds, creating simple sentences. Grammar will be introduced by learning ⅓ of the verbs and using them correctly in sentences. The parts of speech will also be introduced in this course and will be expanded on in higher level courses.

Numbers will be learned from 1 - 999. We will be able to use these numbers in counting money as well as learning how to locate houses or streets on a map. Questions and answers will be integrated so that we can build on sentences into the next level. All lessons use themes to guide us smoothly through each lesson. Housing; Occupations; Transportation;Food and Clothing are examples of the themes used to guide each lesson.

Intermediate ESL

This course is an extension of Low ESL, and continues to build the English language. Themes are used as well in teaching this level. Some examples of the themes used are: Community; Housing; Physical ailments;Jobs and their required skills, among others. Grammar is continued by introducing more details around the parts of speech such as: The verb: To live and To be, To have; teaches negative and affirmative simple present tense as well and the present continuous verb; using yes/no questions around each of these; discuss some/any; as well as modals, imperatives future infinitives. Those were just a few. All material is taught in a progressive way by building upon each lesson. Paragraphs are focused on this level.
